Greatest WSSU QB of All-Time?
This is the first in a series on the greatest players at WSSU at each position.
Over the years, a lot of great players have come through Winston-Salem State. Many of them happen to be quarterback. There's no coincidence that the three men pictured above--Kermit Blount, Tory Woodbury and Kam Smith--have led the program to six of its nine CIAA Championships.
Blount, Woodbury and Smith all led WSSU to back-to-back CIAA Titles: Blount in '77 and '78, Woodbury in '99 and '00 and Smith in 2011 and '2012.
So here's the question: If you were starting a hypothetical All-Time WSSU squad, which quarterback would start? Before answering, take a closer look at the candidates.
Keep in mind, Blount played in Bill Hayes' run-first, ball control offense, and played with two running backs that were both drafted into the NFL (Timmy Newsome and Arrington Jones). Blount would later return to the program as head coach, and currently holds the record for most wins in WSSU history. He is easily responsible for over 100 wins as a player and coach.
Next up, Blount's disciple Tory Woodbury.
Like Blount, Woodbury played in an offense geared toward ball-control. Still, when you consider he went an entire season without throwing the ball to the other team, that's pretty damn good ball control.
Woodbury was easily the most sought-after pro prospect of the three quarterback on this list. Woodbury was even Mel Kiper's Sleeper of the Week prior to the 2001 draft. Check out him putting in work against Grambling back in 1999.
And finally, we have the new kid on the block: Kam Smith
Smith came to WSSU and basically re-wrote the passing record book. Navy tried to turn the former Garner star into a wide receiver, but Connell Maynor brought him to WSSU to play quarterback and the rest is history. Smith led WSSU to a comeback win over rival A&T in the 2010 season opener and remained the starter all the way through WSSU's run through the 2012 National Championship Game.
So...who starts at quarterback for the All-Time WSSU team? You tell us. Vote in the poll on the right. Voting end on Friday.
